Day 2 Saving the animals on Starvation Island Kariba

Crocs disrupt saving of trapped animals
We had a very interesting day out at the Starvation Group of Islands on Day 1 (Mon 23/5) of the feeding program. With the extremely high lake level, highest level since the Lake Kariba filled for the first time 50 years ago, Starvation Island has been split into 4 separate islands. This makes the task of feeding even more challenging as the game is not concentrated to one area, and so the decision was made to try and drive the impala, waterbuck and baboons still left on the three smaller islands to the large island.
In theory it is a very simple process, 8 people spread out across the width of the island, start at one end of the island and walk, in a line, to the other driving the game into the shallow water that divides the islands! In reality is was far from simple... while the waterbuck (as their name suggests) quite happily took to the water and competently waded and swam across the divide, the Impala and Baboons had other ideas! The baboons climbed the only tall tree on the island and refused, no matter what we literally 'threw' at them to move!!! With some even taking refuge in a fish eagle's nest near the top of the tree so they could not be spotted by us from below.
Eventually after 3 hours, and many different attempts and tactics, we managed to get a group of 10 impala to take the plunge, but to our horror they were soon surrounded by 4 huge crocodiles, obviously attracted by the crossing waterbuck earlier. There was a mad scramble to get as many boats as possible out to follow the impala in an attempt to scare off the reptiles, which worked initially, but the brazen crocs never moved far off. A decision was made to capture the impala, and help them across to the main island to ensure their safe passage, which was achieved very successfully, I am happy to report!
We have learnt a lot from today and now know exactly how to carry out the rest of the relocation procedure in the safest and easiest way for us and the animals, so hopefully by the time I write about Day 2 we will have safely moved all the wildlife onto the main island and can begin the feeding program in ernest!
More updates tomorrow!
